A short-lived marathon running career is what drove Training Director Mallory Beck into CrossFit and functional fitness in 2013.

“A friend hoodwinked me into running a full marathon and all of my training runs would take me past a CF gym. I knew running was not going to be the ‘thing’ for me, I was goalkeeper in college and already hated running but the challenge of a marathon motivated however, I knew it would be a one and done for me.”

After spending years playing competitive soccer, Beck was looking for a training setting that mirrored the environment back in college, having been a member of the West Virginia University women’s soccer team for five years. “You just get used to coaches and teammates being around all the time and a regular schedule, the routine and team environment, it holds you accountable, you want to be the best version of yourself for the sake of the team because you know everyone is pushing themselves just as hard for the benefit of the team,” Beck said.

“Everything was always laid out, scheduled to the hour of when you eat, go to class, practice, strength and conditioning, recovery, you just had to be where you were supposed to be (early of course) and it was always taken care of,” Beck said.

Following college, Beck would often end up doing old summer workout programs the team had been given from their strength and conditioning coaches but missed the support of teammates and coaches. “That’s what interested and impressed me when I was looking into it, there were a lot of similarities to being part of a team, a ‘we’re all in this together’ mentality.”

Beck walked into Cary CrossFit/Athletic Lab in Cary, North Carolina in 2013 and never looked back.

“I was there for several years before moving for a new job and started training at CrossFit Federal Hill in Baltimore, Maryland in 2016. I was fortunate to have some really knowledgeable and passionate coaches earlier on in my journey and that’s what inspired me to start coaching.”

“A great coach can make all the difference. I don’t mean just by how well I can get someone moving, but more so, this athlete knows I genuinely care about them and where they want to go,” Beck said.
